THE PRESTON POLITICAL PRIMER - A RE-INTRODUCTION AND HONORING ALBERT GALLATIN PRESTON, SR.

THE PRESTON POLITICAL PRIMER – REMEMBERING ALBERT GALLATIN PRESTON, SR. - AN REINTRODUCTION TO THE PRESTON POLITICAL PRIMER:
EDITED BY MORDECAI COSGROVE III:

AS WE CONTINUE IN THIS ELECTION YEAR, THE AQUIDNECK INQUIRER REINTRODUCES THE PRESTON POLITICAL PRIMER ----- A NEUTRAL AND NON-PARTISAN REVIEW OF POLITICS AND CURRENT EVENTS.

THE PRESTON POLITICAL PRIMER IS NAMED FOR ALBERT GALLATIN PRESTON, SR.

MR. PRESTON WAS A NATIVE OF CLOVERDALE, INDIANA AND AN ALUMNUS OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY IN GREENCASTLE. HIS FATHER WAS A PHYSICIAN.

PRESTON, WHOSE ANCESTORS HAD SETTLED IN COLONIAL MASSACHUSETTS, PENNSYLVANIA AND VIRGINIA, MOVED EAST AFTER WORKING IN CHICAGO AND WORKED AS A JOURNALIST IN BUFFALO.

PRESTON LATER BECAME DEEPLY INVOLVED IN POLITICS IN NEW YORK STATE SERVING AS AN OFFICIAL IN THE GOVERNMENT OF BUFFALO, AS A STRATEGIST AND TACTICIAN FOR MANY CANDIDATES AND ELECTED OFFICIALS AND AS A SINGULARLY GIFTED DESIGNER OF POLITICAL SPEECHES.

ONE NOTABLE ITEM OF THE PRESTON LORE IS THAT MR. PRESTON WAS ONE OF THE VERY FEW WHO PREDICTED A DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL VICTORY BY HARRY TRUMAN IN 1948 EVEN THOUGH HE HAD WORKED CLOSELY WITH TOM DEWEY, THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.

AL PRESTON WAS BRILLIANT, TOUGH, HUMOROUS AND A GREAT PUBLIC SERVANT.

THE AQUIDNECK INQUIRER HONORS HIS MEMORY THROUGH THE PRESTON POLITICAL PRIMER.

SCHUYLER VANBUREN ON FILM::::: "MICHAEL CLAYTON" - VOL8/1.26.08/#1

SCHUYLER VAN BUREN ON FILM:“MICHAEL CLAYTON”
(GEORGE CLOONEY/TOM WILKINSON/TILDA SWINTON/SIDNEY POLLACK
(VOL8/1-26-08/#1) ≈

Now, here is the movie we have waited for this season. Not a period piece or a study of a few characters. Rather, a film with real things at stake – with real people dealing with those things – and circumstances that most filmgoers will not realize are very authentic.
The circumstances: the brilliant litigation lawyer (portrayed by Tom Wilkinson) has flashes of clarity sans his medicine which threaten his huge defendant corporate client’s position in a three billion dollar class action lawsuit. The law firm’s fixer (George Clooney) is in charge of bringing Wilkinson under control. The law firm's leader (Sidney Pollack) is worried about the loose cannon litigator and a potential big merger of his firm and another. Tilda Swinton is general counsel of the gigantic defendant corporation in the lawsuit and it is her job to protect the corporation at all costs.
So, you have beautiful conflicts – and much at stake: the law firm’s future; the gigantic corporation’s cash; the brilliant lawyer and his life and future; the career of the firm’s fixer; and the obligation of the corporation general counsel to her company.
The film moves – the film has a gripping, tension filled story, and the film has a true ending and resolution to the conflicts and the circumstances.
See this one ------ it was brought back to the theatres after its nomination for several OSCARS -------- it is a great American story.
GO-GO-GO. (1.26.08)

MONA KERR ON FILM - "ATONEMENT" ///// "THERE WILL BE BLOOD"- VOL.8-1/16/08(FILM)

MOVIE REVIEW – AS AT 1/16/08:
BY MONA KERR:
“ATONEMENT” – UNIVERSAL PICTURES. KIERA KNIGHTLY, JAMES MCAVOY.
Well, one thing about this movie is that, if you have to go to the restroom, you will not miss a thing given the flashbacks – flashforwards etc. But it is a fine picture from the novel, always a challenge. The leads are charming – the newcomers are quite good. Some of the scenes are beautiful – but are they real or put in postproduction? At the end, one might think – was all of this worth it? ===== but, the real point may be the torment that one may have living a life wherein you truly hurt someone – and negatively affected their life - based upon a combination of a big lie plus intentional action and inaction. We all know people who have done that ------ and it is hard to imagine how they do atone, or sleep.
MONA'S RECOMMENDATION - WAIT FOR DVD.

"THERE WILL BE BLOOD" -------- DANIEL DAY-LEWIS ET AL.
Well, here is another slightly overrated film. BUT, SEE IT ------ IT IS QUITE GOOD. The oil man is a bad guy - really bad. (Not all oil men are bad guys.) The characters of many folks are examined. We love DD-L -------- do also see "The Gangs of New York" wherein he plays an equally lovable laugh-a-minute fellow. "Blood" may win the OSCAR ----- and perhaps it should. It is an epic - some history of our Nation's development as an industrial power based on oil - and it examines the way some advanced at the expense of others. MONA'S RECOMMENDATION - SEE IT IN A THEATRE.

VOL/1.16.08/FILM ------- JUNO

FILM REVIEW +++++ BY THE AQUIDNECK INQUIRER CRITIC & SOCIETY EDITOR, THE LOVELY, THE BRILLIANT, THE FABULOUS SCHUYLER VAN BUREN:::::
JUNO::::: THIS WAS IN LIMITED RELEASE AND NOW IN BROAD RELEASE - BUT THIS IS A BRILLIANT, CHARMING DECISIVE MOVIE - WE DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT AND THE FILM WAS FUN, DISTURBING AND TAKES ON A TOUGH TOPIC. WE WILL NOT PREACH, BUT THE ULTIMATE LESSON OF THE FLICK IS PRETTY OBVIOUS.
